Books and more

We have bookcases now; in fact we have a book case each. His and Hers, side by side in the lounge.

We promised ourselves when we moved that we would get bookcases instead of diving head-first into storage cupboards trying to find our favourite books.

Him Indoors built them on our first weekend here, well by building them I mean he put them...

Dig this

Dig this or in my case don't dig it at all.

I have reached a stage in my life and illness, where digging hurts like hell and I just don't have the strength to dig deep anymore.

So when it came to making new gardens at our new abode I thought to hell with all this digging lark I am going in for no-dig gardens. They are so simple to make...

Cats again

We had hoped that once we left the valley we wouldn't get nocturnal or day time visits from the local feline population, but no, they come in through the cat door and eat our wussy cat's food.

We tried putting the rubbish bin in front the cat door but they are strong cats up here and pushed it aside. So the next thing was a heavy pot...

Wind in the willows

As you may have guessed we have moved to a new abode high on the hills over looking the Hutt Valley and to the south, on a clear day, Wellington harbour and city.

The wild life up here is amazing. This morning as I was making a new garden for our Incredible Edibles (raspberries, guava, plum and apple trees), I was being serenaded by a tui. Well...

Getting the wind up

The northerly wind has been blowing all day.

It arrives with a gentle breeze then picks up and rushes around the gardens zooming up to the top of the silver birch and the tallest of the cherry trees ripping off leaves and small branches. It flirts with the last of the summer roses and blowing the petals off till it looks like confetti has been...

Blogging

Leave Comment
I haven't blogged for a while. Things have overtaken the blogging part of my brain including what the word 'blog' stood for and then I found out it means 'web log'. Quite clever how all these words have come into being since the internet began.

It has a language of its own. Twitter is a good one since I thought that's...

Higher and higher

Leave Comment
As it’s been hot lately we have been leaving the windows in the top rooms of the apartment open during the day. Normally the cat doesn’t worry about jumping onto the roof via one of the windows and we haven’t worried either. That was until about 2 weeks ago when there was a sad little ‘meow’ wafting in through said window. Yep she was...

Changing the weather

I am looking out the window to the north of the valley and there are grey high clouds, yesterday it was clear fine and very warm, tomorrow it will probably be raining. It is possibly snowing somewhere in Great Britain, hailing in Moscow, boiling in Jakarta or flooding in India. I can’t change any of this. No one as far as I know, has any way...

Has-beans

I like growing beans. Him Indoors loves eating fresh beans. I bought a new bean rack last year to grow beans over. I got sent two packets of purple beans, one dwarf and one runner. And how I looked forward into planting them.

The soil was made ready for these delicious beans to begin to sprout and climb upwards (in the case of the runners,...

Bird Talk

I caught a thrush digging up the garden mulch yesterday. He wasn’t at least shamefaced about being caught; in fact he gave me a sneering look and continued. It wasn’t until I got closer to him that he flew off up to the top of the cherry tree and proceeded to scold me with some rather angry bird-talk.

They seem to like all the mulch in the...
