| Re: Request for a Sunny Day Icon - Post Icon Its good suggestion Graeme, infact we had a similar discussion on MWF a while ago and we came to the concusion that using a sun or a cloud would not really represent an extreme. The post icons are there to highlight a post and therefore reflect extremes; heavy rain, snow, ice, pressure, temp, high winds, tornado, hurricane/cyclone and thunderstorm. The only one that we are really missing is FOG. What we did as a compromise was to use smilies. There are smilies, that hopefully represent the main weather types, that can be used within the post, so you could end up with something like Today has been really sunny with not a cloud in site and no chance or rain for weeks. This high is still building, currently at 1038 Hpa in AucklandHowever, I am aware that NZ has a different climate so I'm happy to open it up for discussion. |

| I only say this because NZ is as long as the US is from Lake Michigan to Southern Texas and as they have huge local climates different to other regions Virginia vs Idaho, Maryland Vs Texas that in NZ we have very localised regional climates quite different to other regions - we have deserts in NI and in SI, we have 8,000ft mountains north & sth, we have coastal climates very different in NI to west Coast, what I am saying is that we can have extremes in weather on the same day but only 800kms apart and that to have a sunny day for Southland after weeks of wet westerly weather while the rest of NZ basks in sunshine and westerlies or whatever, that sunshine for Southland or the West Coast - since we have a member from Westport, is a big thing, and that we here in the Waikato in a inland plateau can be devoid of clouds (notice our clear frosty skies while cloudy in the City of Sails) for days on end. Our climates in NZ are vastly different to those of the UK - wouldn't you agree? That for some, a sunny day in Autumn can be very rare, and for others say Alexandra, a cloudy day could be few and far between. Hence I noticed the loss - and yes Fog is another - a member yet to arrive (I hope) will support the use of a Fog icon especially for Hamilton!! Christchurch may have a brown fog... sorry - I guess the air has cleaned up down there in the last 20 years of council subsidisation of cleaner forms of heating and insulation. ![]()

| Re: Request for a Sunny Day Icon - Post Icon While day-to-day or week-to-week variations may be big, annual ones aren't that large for some stats. Rainfall - yes, varies from 345mm to over 10,000mm in the annual averages. Mean annual temp. at sea level range is about 6C-6.5C, not that big. Annual sunshine in inhabited areas varies between about 39% and 59%, not a very large range. |
