| Two shallow earthquakes shook Auckland this evening, and were felt around the region. A tremor measuring 4.5 on the richter scale shook the region at 9pm. It was centred 30km east of Orewa and was 15km deep. Nearly 40 minutes prior to that a smaller earthquake measuring 3.7 in magnitude, also centred 30km east of Orewa but at a depth was six kilometres shook was reported. GNS said both quakes would have been felt in the Auckland region. The quakes were the largest experienced in Auckland since 1970, when a quake of 4.7 was located in the Coromandel.
