Erosion on Mt Taranaki

Check this one out- it is on the front page of our daily paper

Massive erosion on Mt Taranaki's western slopes could threaten State Highway 45 and endanger Opunake's water supply.

"The side of the Taranaki volcano is literally falling to bits," Taranaki Regional Council chief executive Basil Chamberlain said yesterday.
Rivers are being choked by the huge amount of rocks, sand and water moving down the river systems.
"I'm not sure that many people are quite aware of the magnitude of this event. Inside Egmont National Park, huge gorges are being carved out as we speak."
The extent of the erosion was made public at a meeting of the regional council's executive committee yesterday.
It resolved to spend close to $100,000 clearing part of the channels of some rivers and streams filled with erosion material being pushed downstream

Re: Erosion on Mt Taranaki

Gosh!! Quite horrific - and there's more rains to come, it sounds like it may take a detour in the lower river reaches where it gets dammed suddenly - then there is property and life to consider, and access. re-opening channels for flow is a great concern here.

It isn't a new thing in that it has been hanging around for a while but it isn't going to get any better! I'm glad I live around my side of the mountain!
