Re: Sydney's Weather

Yesterday: After a cold & clear night, mainly sunny day with periods of high cloud with dry, cold SW-W winds. Min of 8oC and max of 17 degrees.

Today: After another clear & cold night (the W wind was certainly bitterly cold this morning), sunny day with blue dome skies. A bit warmer in the afternoon than has been over last few days, however that was in the sun. Much colder in un-sunny areas with moderate W winds.

City: 9/19
Airport: 9/19

Maximums ranged from mostly 18 - 19 degrees across the basin with the lowest maximum of 17 degrees at Horsley Park and Terrey Hills.

A very cold morning out west with 1 degree at Richmond and 2 degrees at Badgerys Creek.

More of this weather to continue over next 7 days, however I'll be in Melbourne from tomorrow until Monday where it will be changeable with a bit of everything (gales are expected tomorrow & Thursday)

Won't be making any posts on Sydney's weather until Monday.

That would be the Westgate Bridge collaspe which happened on the 15th of October 1970 which killed 35 people.

Re: Sydney's Weather

After some overnight light rain, today dawned cold and clear with light winds. After 11am warmer W-NW winds suddenly increased to gale-force blowing really hard for a couple of hours this afternoon before easing. Currently light to moderate cooler SW winds. The winds were particularly horrendous from late morning until mid afternoon (Is there no getting away from those damn winds!) with dust, leaves and rubbish being blown all over the place.

City: 10/19
Airport: 8/20
Highest max: Airport & Olympic Park with 20oC
Lowest min: 1oC at Holdsworthy (W) with 2oC at Canterbury and 3oC at Campbelltown & Bankstown (W/SW)

Highest gusts: 82km/hr at Airport and 98km/hr at Newcastle.

More fine, sunny and windy weather expected over next 7 days with cold minimums & cool maximums.

Re: Sydney's Weather

Good to see you back after your southern sojourn! Thanks for the name of the Westgate bridge- I was on a drinking holiday there with some mates at the time and it was rather hazy!

Re: Sydney's Weather

After a nice night of no winds, today dawned cold and sunny which was nice but as the day dragged on, cool W winds strengthened rapidly to be gusty to gale force at times, has started to calm down now but with moderate gusts at times (It seems that over the past 7 days, I've had more than my fair share of being pummelled by strong winds ). Remained sunny and clear with streaks of high cloud.

City: 10/19
Airport: 9/19
Lowest min: 4 at Badgerys Creek and Canterbury

Highest gusts: 111km/hr at Bellambi (Plenty of damage done), 91km/hr at Wattamolla, 80km/hr at North Head and 76km/hr at the airport.

Re: Sydney's Weather

June 2008 Climate Summary

Sydney extreme rainfall in 1 June to 26 June 2008

Sun total ended up at 141.1 hrs (78.6% of average), however only 47.4 hrs during 1st 20 days (I count those with less than 0.9 as no sun). 3rd consecutive June of well below average sunshine.

Rainfall of 127.2mm just about average, a big contrast to last year which had 510mm but still better than May's total of 3mm.

Final rain total for Rose Bay during May is 11.2mm (Not 10mm as stated before). Currently the total for June stands at 112mm but readings are not yet complete/verified so will wait for the final reading due out in the middle of this month, I estimate that the monthly total is somwhere between 120-130mm.

Rainfall for 6 months ending June 2008:

Ob Hill: 655.6
Airport: 621.0
Rose Bay: 549.2 (To end May)

Re: Sydney's Weather

A lovely cold, crisp & sunny start with little wind , remaining so for the rest of the day with light to moderate breezes & few clouds about around midday. Really nice without those pesky strong winds which have been dominating all week.

City: 9/17
Airport: 7/16
Highest max: 18 at Olympic Park
Lowest max: 15 at Terrey Hills
Lowest min: 1 degree at Badgerys Creek, Campbelltown and Richmond in the west.

Looks like the clear, sunny and dry days are coming to an end with changeable weather from tomorrow onwards with a bit of everything

Apparently there was some major flooding in Sydney and/or other parts of NSW around that time - I'm sure that rainfan can help out here!

Melbourne had its share of disruption - 2 or 3 days washed out for a tour match in November 1954, and 3 days lost in a game earlier in February 1955.

There was a long-running and strong La Nina that covered this period (as measured by the oceanic ONI index - the SOI lagged it a bit). NZ had some very interesting weather in Feb. and March 1955, but that's another story.
Regarding the Nov. 1954 weather in Melbourne - Rainfall totalled 206mm for the month on 14 days with the latter being a record, still stands today. There were some storms with heavy downpours with 73mm falling to 9am on the 21st accompained by gales. Sunshine for the month totalled 204 hours.

Feb. 1955 had 102mm on 10 days & it was a very cloudy month with only 173 hrs.
