We are approaching 200mm for the month with a YTD surplus of over 180mm. The longterm average for Jun-Aug is 392mm, last year was 366mm and 2006 605mm (the highest in the Kelburn-only record). This year so far has about 333 with a significant increase likely in the next few days. The March-July total is now 813mm, could conceivably pass 1956's total of 860 but not the swamping in 1974 which had 955. So the accumulation over those months, combined with a comparative lack of strong winds overall, is the cause of the sogginess.
The opposite here, running at a deficient at the moment but expect July's total (123; avge 97) to close the gap further for Rose Bay but still lagging by approx 20-25mm. For Ob Hill still lagging behind by approx 90-100mm (89mm; avge 97mm)

Rose Bay wettest month on average: April 142mm
Ob Hill wettest month on average: June 130mm

Ending June:

Ob Hill - actual: 655mm
mean: 722mm

Rose Bay - actual: 684mm
mean: 733mm

This year has seen totals at Ob Hill bounce down and up - Jan below, Feb above, Mar below, April above, May below then up to a stable pattern with averages reached for June & July.

For the same period last year which includes the second wettest June on record of 510mm: 918mm

Re: Sydney's Weather

Had some more showers overnight which affected only coastal areas, did not extend further inland to areas like the city & airport. Sunny (apart from few clouds around during the afternoon) with quite cold winds.

City: 6/17
Airport: 6/15

Minimums dropped to zero at Richmond and 1 degree at Badgerys Creek & Campbelltown.

Rain to 9am today:
Rose Bay: 4.2mm

With the last day of July being tomorrow & no rain forecast - Rose Bay's July total now at 128mm & Ob Hill at 89mm.

For Rose Bay wettest July since 2006 (233mm)

Re: Sydney's Weather

Take away those nasty icy cold winds then will be so perfect! Now you can see why I hate those icy cold westerlies as I've come down with the flu since last night for the third time in 6 weeks (quite severe this time around)

Sunny and clear so far but cool with light to moderate winds. Temps dropped to 6 degrees this morning in the city with -1 at Richmond & Badgerys Creek.

Sorry about your 'flu. Anyway, it is nearly August and in my book that means Winter is on the way out!

Re: Sydney's Weather

Thanks ATO2, I was a real grump on Thursday . After being bed-bound for 2 days, am feeling much better , flu is on it's weak last legs inside me .

After last night's gale force westerlies (89km/hr at airport) today ended up a sunny with blue dome skies day with cold fresh to strong westerlies.

City 9/16
Airport 10/17

Thursday was sunny all day. After min of 6oC, temp rose to 20oC in the afternoon with light NW winds - a perfect day (too bad I was in bed with the flu!)

Yesterday:- Very changeable. A mild night with low of only 13oC, it was mostly cloudy with strong to gale warm NW winds changing to much colder gale southwesterlies (I was so glad to be in bed during this!) in the afternoon with some light showers around. Max before the change was 20oC.

After last night's gale force westerlies (89km/hr at airport) today ended up a sunny with blue dome skies day with cold fresh to strong westerlies.

City 9/16
Airport 10/17

Gonna be a cold one tonight with 6 degrees for the city & zero at Richmond.

Re: Sydney's Weather

July 2008 Summary:

Sydney extreme rainfall in 1 July to 31 July 2008

Rose Bay daily's total of 70.6mm was to 9am on the 29th. Month's rain total now at 135.6 up from 128mm (prelim.) Rain YTD - 819.8mm (deficient of 12.6mm).

Ob Hill rain YTD 745.2mm (deficient of 80.2mm)

Airport sunshine 201 hrs, 4 below average. YTD 1431 hrs which is 2 hours below average. There were 15 days of daily totals exceeding 8 hrs & no sun on 4 days.

As for that wind - need I say more

Interesting re apparent wind chill was 1oC at 5pm on Monday 28th at 5pm at airport - would explain why felt so cold that day!

. A blue dome sky is what I refer to when there is not a single cloud at all in the sky at all from sunrise to sunset & the sky is at it's bluest.

I do hope you get some better dryiing out & sunny weather during August but dare I say it - doesn't look too likely from current models, maybe will change later on for the better!.

Re: Sydney's Weather

I meant it was so long ago since I saw a blue dome sky I'd forgotten what it looked like! Actually had two sunny days last week Thursday and Friday - short term memory loss... still had some clouds, but a times it was very blue!
