Re: Sydney's Weather

I have been a bit tardy, will get some old NZ Septembers done in the next few days I hope.

Sept 1981 in NZ was a dry windy month, cloudy in the west and southern quarter but normal to above sunshine in the east, significantly above in Nelson, Marlborough and Wellington. There was high incidence of dryish southwesterlies at both ends of the country. Temperatures near normal.

Sept 1990 was anticyclonic over the southern parts of NZ. Sunshine above in many parts, cooler than average in much of the North Island (the first month since May 1988 that had below average temps. there). Drier than normal over much of the country, especially in the southern hinterlands.

Re: Sydney's Weather

6.51am - Overcast, quite windy & cold, 14oC. Had some showers last night; nothing since then, rain sure is taking it's time getting here from the north but then ECLs are often unpredictable in the path it'll take; NE NSW is getting hammered atm; Brisbane had 41mm since 9am yesterday with higher totals (70mm+) on the Sunshine (or Rainshine) Coast.

Off work today because going down the well-trodden path to the airport once again to pick up mate from Melbourne, staying with us for 4 days.

Sept. 1981 - wettest (Sept) on record at Invercargill with 173mm, SW winds constituted 50% of the wind data - record in the last 25 years. 104 hrs of sun.

A good example of a point that a certain idiot troller on a certain forum should note!

Indeed. As I recall you once said "Never let reality get in the way of obsession"

I've read your thread in the other forum - you seem to have ruffled a few feathers re the "Bad Headline" part, interesting reading & had to laugh at your "thanks for the fish" comment

Here is a link to Sydney's web-cam; looking towards the eastern suburbs from the city; Bondi is on the right. Note the trees in the foreground hasn't yet bloomed.

Looks like you could be in for a bit of rain, judging by those webcams!

I thought I'd throw in the "Hitchhiker" part because we were going round in circles and it seemed to be time to check out!

But seriously, my point was not really a weather one, or about accuracy of prediction - just the total inconsistency between the headline and the actual content of the article.

Re: Sydney's Weather

Sydney looks about as gloomy as W'gton and much of central NZ at the moment!

Re: Sydney's Weather

It's certainly been that Rwood and much more

Yesterday:- Rain from 10am, some squally heavy falls with strong cold S winds; gale on the coast. Max of 15oC. Max gust: 61km/hr at airport.

Rain to 9am today:
City: 62mm
Airport: 47mm
Rose Bay: 40mm
Randwick: 50mm
Highest fall: 86mm at St Ives & 85mm at Gordon West; both on the North Shore.

Today: Rain, some squally heavy falls; easing around 6pm to showers, has stopped now & winds easing. Very cold with strong S winds; gale on the coast. Max gust: 70km/hr at airport. Max of 13oC in city & airport.

Rain since 9am today:
City: 21mm
Airport: 12mm
Rose Bay: 18mm
Avalon (North Shore): 29mm

Coldest September day at city site since 1975 (13.1oC on 5th). 3rd day of no sun. Sept. average rainfalls already reached/exceeded. Certainly a very wintry couple of days ; all lawns/parks totally sodden/muddy/flooded; puddles everywhere; several trees blown done including a big one in Waverley Park. Hundreds of broken umbrellas dumped all over the city/Bondi. Plenty of people battling against the wind/driving rain with umbrellas only to have them shredded to bits; many of them "golf" ones.

Mate up here atm from Melbourne can't believe how much it has rained here, noted there since he arrived at 1120am yesterday - has not stopped raining & said would be so lucky to get that in Melbourne at all, really is liking the wet weather in spite of his umbrella being ripped to bits in the city (twice!) . BTW it was sunny & 19 in Melbourne today; he suggested that Sydney is now Melbourne and vice versa.

Expected to fine up tomorrow as the ECL moves away further east with temperatures back to normal levels from Wednesday but changeable with fine & showery days expected over next seven days.
