Re: Sydney's Weather

Has inland Victoria received some rain from this back end of a high moist NE system?
(as they are still in drought there!)

Re: Sydney's Weather

I must recheck June 1964 over here, could be some interesting relationships with the Sydney spell - back later on that.

Re: Sydney's Weather

June 1964 in NZ - some ad hoc notes.

Weather sequence: Southwesterlies to the 11th, very unsettled in Southland. Cold southerly change on 9/10 affected Southland, Otago, Canterbury.

Remainder of month: Typically variable conditions, often anticyclonic over the South Island. Depressions affecting mostly the North Island from 12-15 (also north of SI), 18-19 (Gisborne, Hawkes Bay), 21-23 (partic. Gisborne-HB, and north of Auckland), 24-29 (mostly Auckland province).

June was dry over almost all of the South Island, exceptionally so in North and Central Otago. A bit drier than average in central and western districts of the NI and Northland. Palliser to East Cape and parts of Coromandel had up to 3 times the average rainfall.

Temperatures were near average, above in Northland.

A cloudy month except around Taranaki-Taumarunui, coastal Otago, West Coast and Otago lakes district. Large defiencies in parts of Bay of Plenty, Marlborough, Canterbury and Central Otago, also below in Southland.

Alexandra had just 0.09" rain (2mm) but only 66 hrs' sun with fog events. Invercargill's prolonged SW spell left sunshine hours at 54 (but its rainfall was only 2/3 of average).

I commented in another forum some time back that in 1964 the west and south of the SI was drier than one would expect given the frequency of unsettled westerly conditions. These areas did have a very cloudy year however, and most of the country was cloudier than average. Power restrictions were in force for some of what was quite a mild winter.

Regarding the Sydney event, presumably there was some blocking to the south of Tasmania that produced S/SE over NSW/Sydney and SW over NZ with low pressure to the east of NZ.

(Info. from the Climate table published in NZ Gazette)

They did. By our standards not much but to them it's a lot. You can see more detailed reports via Australia & World Weather Forecast, BoM Radar, Rainfall Map & Report in the breaking weather update threads.

Re: Sydney's Weather

In addition to my post re June 1964, after the S-SE spell ended on the 13th - mild, windy W-NW weather prevailed with no rain over the remainder. Sunshine however wasn't overtly high with 160hrs. 5 days exceeded 20oC - highest since 1962.

The heavy rain/gales from the 9th-12th althought not "said" could be attributed to a ECL or LPS. Will need to do more research on this later.

Rain ending 9am since the S-SE event began:

6th 23.4
7th 66.3
8th 36.8
9th 38.1
10th 85.6
11th 41.4
12th 101.9
13th 13.7

Re: Sydney's Weather

Weather since last post to end yesterday has been very cloudy, showers/rain from time to time and quite mild.

Today was the second significant "sunny" day of this month after early morning showers cleared with cloud clearing by mid morning.

Very mild today with light N-NW winds. Very still here atm and quite mild - 18oC which is nice, got some windows open & heaters have been off during the past week & even had to throw off that extra winter doona as it's too warm .

City: 13/22
Airport: 13/22
Highest max: 22 degrees at City, Airport and Canterbury
Lowest min: 10 degrees at Holdsworthy (W)
Maximums ranged from 20-22 degrees over the metro area

Rain to 9am:
City: 5.6mm
Airport: 3.0mm
Rose Bay: 8.2mm

Rain MTD:
City: 110.8mm
Airport: 95.6mm
Rose Bay: 122.2mm

Sunshine MTD:
To end 11th June 16.6 hours. Certainly one of the cloudiest starts to June on record.

Re: Sydney's Weather

Warmth is always appreciated at this time of the year! That certainly isn't much Sun, for sure.We have 54 hrs MTD but I would imagine that over the rest of the month you will still collect more than us.
