This can be used to discuss/post any weather/obs. My brother flew down to Melbourne early this morning with a mate, he SMed me saying it was absolutely freezing - no wonder - the min dropped to 2oC at the airport & in the city making this the lowest May min temp since 1981. Max today was only 14oC with early frost/fog then sunshine.Another cold one tonight with min of 3oC expected then 16oC with fog/frosts at first then sunshine to follow. Brother returns to Sydney Sunday afternoon.

Re: Australia General Weather Brother SMed me messages below whilst he was in Melbourne, I'm going to embarass him by putting them down here for all and sundry to see. I found some of them quite funny Friday 23 May 9:55am "My jaws & ears hurt a hell of a lot from cold.My body is in shock of cruel degree drops.Had 3 coffees so far and not helping much at all". 1:25pm "More sunnier & warmer now but still too cool" 7:54pm "Foggy now. Very cold and chilly.Ugh!" 10:06pm "Freaky that I'm down here during the lowest May min temp in 27 years!. Outside is so murderously cold making me shiver uncontrollably. It's like smoking with no actual ciggies". Saturday 24 May 9:34pm "Very glad to be returning to Sydney tomorrow as can't stand Melbourne's very cruel cold weather!" Sunday 25 May 1:46pm "Glad to be back in Sydney away from Melbourne's chilly cold in mornings and afternoons to nights. It's like the South Pole down there!" And ends the saga of his battle with Melbourne's cold On a more serious note - The NSW part of the Alps recorded very severe low min temps during the past few nights. Charlotte Pass measured -13.4oC and Thredbo -11oC with the latter being the lowest in 30 years.

Re: Australia General Weather You brother's Melb. conditions would be described by Minnesotans as a freak winter heatwave! My middle brother was in Brisbane 1981-1985, loved the climate (was always a sunlover).

Re: Australia General Weather I'm going to Melbourne for work from June 25th to 30th so I'll be hoping to see cold, wet and cloudy weather. Melbourne hasn't had much sun this month - only 98 hours of sun to end yesterday - Sydney's had 100 hours more!

Re: Australia General Weather On this business: Some years ago, I remember flying down to Perth, from Singapore. It was sunny, warm etc- in March, and I felt the air was lovely and refreshing and so cool at night compared to Singapore! LOL. I needed a jersey in the mornings! My body had adjusted to the constant temperatures and high humidity after some years on the equator and even small differences were hard to take and felt like a novelty!

Re: Australia General Weather Yes. Perth's "dry" heat doesn't make it feel so hot as would a humid one. Night-time temps can be somewhat cool, however some summer nights can be quite hot & dry.

Re: Australia General Weather Dry Aussie autumn: May 2008 was Australia’s driest May on record. The dry May combined with relatively poor rainfall in March and April contributed to large parts of Australia experiencing rainfall deficiencies during autumn. Deficiencies at the yearly timescale highlight areas that have received little rainfall relief in recent months, with large areas of deficiencies through central and southern parts of Australia. For the 3-month period from March 2008 to May 2008, areas of serious to severe rainfall deficiencies covered large parts of Australia. In northern Australia this was indicative of an early end to the wet season, whilst southern Australia experienced a poor start to the southern wet season. Across the Murray-Darling Basin it was the fourth driest autumn on record. Drought Statement - A dry autumn over much of Australia
