| "A tornado tore through a Boy Scout camp in the remote hills of western Iowa yesterday evening, killing at least four people, injuring 40, and setting off a frantic search to reach others trapped by piles of debris and fallen trees. Thomas White, a scout supervisor, said that he dug through the wreckage of a collapsed fireplace to reach victims in a building where many scouts had taken shelter." | The 93 kids and 29 staff (I recall) knew about the impending tornados but became trapped as I believe trees had already fallen over their means of escape so they had to rely on the buildings - most of which collapsed on the terrified, sheltering group, or trees also landed on the buildings. Of the 93 kids 12~18yo, 40 of them sustained injuries and many of those had head injuries. A very sad situation - it was a leaders camp, so they were nice active growing kids. Very sad. Another of the scout camp: cbs2chicago.com - Apparent Tornado Strikes Iowa Boy Scout Camp, At Least 4 Dead 40 Injured Iowa has almost record equalling breaking floods at the moment (with the 1993 storm) - river levels are extreme as more rain falls in the northern half of the state and Minnesota and Wisconsin which will add to the river flows. The storm which caused the tornados is now heading to the east and passing into Illinois. here is the storm intensity: Intellicast - National Infrared Satellite in United States ![]() here is a link of the state of the rivers - purple is extreme North Central River Forecast The major City is just above the "...ns" A Towercam in Des Moines (State capitol of IA) of the flooded river and bridges: http://images.ibsys.com/des/images/w...m3_640x480.jpg They have been hit hard in NE and IA in the last 6 weeks with regular storms and tornados - the usual corn planting is now late and the grounds will be too wet for some time, it will hurt the production of the state for this summer. I have friends who live there and work in Des Moines.

| Re: Iowa tornado kills 4 I've made some edits to your post above Graeme, as we have to watch the hotlinks. Hotlinks are links to a referenced website, where the material can change over time, thus making the link invalid for anyone reading the thread in a couple of days time. This is particularly noticable on forecast images. Best way to combat these changes it to link and reference the page concerned, then post the image as an attachment or a thumbnail. |

Yes reading through the article it looks like they were caught out during their hike. Such a shame and only a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. |

| I have been referring to the weather map for three weeks now - it has been relative for all of their rough weather they have had for the whole period. Esp if on a first page of a thread, it is always easy to find. The towercam picture is 24/7 and I have been watching that for the last two days continuously too, seeing the river levels rise. Due to keep rising for the next two days into their Saturday and possibly Sunday. By then the tornado topic will have finished and this flood will be continuing. Thanks for transferring the images to storage and posting the thumbnails, I was trying to head off to bed... about to go now Just installed/upgraded to Opera 9.5 to see if it eliminates one or two quirks. See you in the morning LOL. Ahhh, no - it does some things differently - the Scroll wheel has different effect now - the meso map can disappear and only left with two tables - one repeated set of the Station data table - the same previous error not fixed. reading frames seems different, also the background of white has gone. Not sure if it is an improvement in functionality or not (oops! - O/T)

| A few more articles from the BBC: Video: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7449813.stm At least four people have been killed by a tornado that devastated a boy scout camp in western Iowa. ------------------------ Aerial footage video: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7452363.stm (Please note no sound) Flooding from rain swollen rivers has forced the evacuation of thousands of people and has damaged homes and businesses across the US state of Iowa. State Governor Chet Culver said that with nine rivers at near record levels, dozens of bridges have been destroyed. He has declared 55 out of Iowa's 99 counties state disaster areas and says infrastructure repair costs will run into hundreds of millions of dollars. The state suffered storms on Wednesday and Thursday and more rain is forecast. ------------------------ Pictures of the devastation: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/7453323.stm ------------------------ Article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7454237.stm Thousands of people in the US state of Iowa have been urged to leave their homes because of rising river levels. A hospital in the city of Cedar Rapids was flooded and its patients evacuated after the Cedar river burst its banks and swamped more than 400 streets. Iowa Governor Chet Culver has declared 83 of the state's 99 counties to be disaster areas and said that nine rivers are at, or above, record levels. The floods have also destroyed most of the Midwest's corn and soybean crops. The damage has helped push prices for the foods to record levels this week. Wheat, oats and rice production has also been affected. ------------------------ Video and article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7449811.stm At least four people have been killed by a tornado that devastated a boy scout camp in the US state of Iowa. Officials say as many as 40 people were injured at the camp near Little Sioux, in the west of the state. More than 100 people were reportedly at the site when the tornado struck at about 1900 (2300 GMT). The US tornado season - which peaks in the spring and early summer and affects many mid-Western states - has been particularly deadly this year.

| Back to the photo I posted - it seems that it may even be a hoax and doctred, it still had a sony DSC number sequence on it and I figured it was just reduced in size and passed to my friend, but it is not what it seems so it seems.
