Rain June 13 heavy rain submerges Beijing

Xinhua reporter Li Huizi took more than one hour to drive across the 2-km Chengfu Road in the northwestern Haidian District starting at about 6 p.m.

"The water is as high as a car wheel. Three of the four lanes were inundated. Many cars broke down on the roads," she said.

Zhou Mei, a local resident in Haidian district, had to leave her car at the West Third Ring Road after it broke down in the water. She took off her shoes and carried her son home on her back.

"The government should do something about the drainage system," Zhou said.

The corrupt CCP can do what? How to hold the olympics confidently?

Re: June 13 heavy rain submerges Beijing

I'm quite happy to discuss the Chinese weather and particularly the olympics as it has a relevance to the countries participating, but I do not want to see this (or any others) become a political thread - thats for other forums.

Its going to be difficult. As we have seen, the olympics will be held within the so called "rainy season".

Globally, everywhere appears to be having more incidences of severe isolated weather events, but is that because its actually happening more often, or because of the heightened media awareness?

Beijing will have to do a lot more for storm draining by the looks of things, but then so will many cities in the UK - ask residents of Hull, Gloucester, Worcester, York and others.

People say that money is budgeted for these types of upgrades, but the money disappears and the work never gets done.

Corruption and peacockery!

and therein lies the problem. And I guess the importance of having those met stations with their long term records recorded under standard conditions becomes even more vital.

I don't think I will be complaining about the drains around my area, after seeing that picture!
