ice Re: Snow and Heavy Rain 4th July 2008

This low stays set for a couple of days and has influence into Saturday quite strongly with the cold southerly flow bringing snow to high levels still and strong SW-S winds.

The brown circle like lines indicate snow in Central Plateau - National Park, Kaikouras and Southern Alps.

A cold weekend coming up!

Re: Week 5th to 11th July 2008

Snow, snow, snow.

Looks like snow to ground level across southern areas of South Island and a dose in Central North Island too. Cold pool of air staying over much of the country.

East coast is going to catch the brunt with some high winds too.

GFS for 5th July 2008 @ 00:00, 06:00, midday and 18:00 NZT - 500hpa surface/temp from 06:00

Re: Week 5th to 11th July 2008

High pushing in for the rest of the week, although it will be approaching from the west, maintaining a cold southerly airflow for the next few days.
Set to dominate the 8th and 9th July with 1034 hpa
11th July looking like a return to some heavy rain - wet

Right, so before the tenth, I should order road metal for the driveway on my rental property so the tenants are happy!

Re: Week 5th to 11th July 2008

I have relatives in Christchurch and this is how they describe the weather there recently. I asked them if they had received a lot of hail:

Hail- well yes i guess- but the strong WIND- 130mph- its been majorly strong. Snow too!!! Looks soo pretty- they shut one of our main access routes into Christchurch- most has melted in Christchurch now though :-( doesn't seem to last long. Though coming over the hill and looking over Christchurch to the southern Alps- is stunning- the sun rise on the snow well its wow.

Re: Week 5th to 11th July 2008

Things still look very cold over the next few days. Ice and frosts expected overnight under clear skies as the high builds and dominates the pattern until the latter half of the week.
