Smile Weather reports for May 3rd, 2008

New Plymouth, 8.30am: Fine, sunny, flicker of wind from SE, around 9 degrees.
Forecast says 15 max and ovenight of one degree! That would be most odd for us in town to have a temperature that low.

Icy rain with small hail in Chch so far this morning. About 4-5C. There was heavy snow on Port Hills last night - enough to close Dyers Pass Rd for a while. (according to today's Press)

Sounds rather bitterly cold there, tich! It has remained sunny here, the mountain is clear but has some fresh snow on it, down to about 1500 metres.

Sure is wintry for so early. The snow was still on the Port Hills above about 300m late this afternoon. Normally if snow falls so low this early (not that common - about 3 times in last decade), it melts within a few hours. But not today. The icy squalls of rain and hail only eased from midafternoon.

A brief morning warmup, then cold SSW wind with more cloud but little precipitation.

The snow on Mt Taranaki would be down to 1500 metres, I guess. Very clear and sunny day it was, but not warm, though after what you described Tich, I guess I should not complain! We went down town last night and found that our new cold air temperatures were a shock as we walked round.

Sunny all day, but I lit a fire towards evening!
