Re: Weather Reports, June 12th, 2008

I think corroboration from the other Timaru site (the Gardens - the one quoted is probably the airport) is required. If a high cloud band arrived at the right time near dawn while receding from Oamaru, it might be feasible (if it didn't reach Ashburton until later).

Re: Weather Reports, June 12th, 2008

A wet night (11th/12th) with some very heavy rain at times, cleared after dawn only to be followed by blustery showers, although these seem to have eased this afternoon. Still a gusty very chilly wind and it feels a lot colder than yesterday or indeed Monday. Max. today was 17C (where's the 28C gone?) A few glimpses of sunshine at times but generally a lot of threatening shower clouds and a lot of mammatus recently.

My brother in Invercargill said it was 15oC today, not only that previous days have been much milder than usual with very few days of maximums being below 10 degrees, however its been much cloudier which would concur with the milder temps. Plenty of rain/showers during the 1st week of this month. More mild weather to come as N-NW weather continues.

Is it true that it was 18 in Oamaru and 16 at Ashburton yet only 8 at Timaru? I'm wondering why is this as Timaru is between Oamaru and Ashburton?
I noted those temperatures on TV. Occasionally they make errors in their presentations though, and I seem to recall Timaru can have some dramatic temperatures- there was snow on the beach there, I think, a short while ago-however so can the other places have some big highs and lows and that particular report seems out of step with the others, unless the report was taken at a specific time of the day and doesn't reflect the maximum for that day, whereas the other stations did? No doubt someone on the forum will know exactly why.

Some of the places contributing those temp. readings are very dodgy. Oamaru didn't like the ones coming from a fairly exposed site, so they set up one in the town that's on a roof or some such silly location. So: from a bit cool to too warm. I only accept readings that get archived and published later ,regard everything else with scepticism.

That solves that one, then. So one can rely on the Timaru reports then. Presumably the high reading for Ashburton was before a front rolled by or is it a dodgey one as well?

Not sure about Ashburton - NIWA has sites in the Council Domain and at the Aero, which seem to have similar profiles (Aero perhaps cooler by a small amount), but the TV one could be either, or even possibly a 3rd one somewhere.

Re: Weather Reports, June 12th, 2008

Should like here read out/show temps for both sites (City/Airport) but I guess that's too much hassle for the weather presenters.

I don't take any notice of temps taken from buildings because of direct exposure to elements & doesn't really paint accurate pictures.

I remember you Rwood said previously that NZ towns/cities like to see their temps shown "higher" on TV than actually is for the sake of having claims to warmer weather than other places!

Oh dear. Changeable summer weather. Hope you get some nice hot & sunny days over July/August.
