New Plymouth, 7.45am: beautiful sunrise. Cloudless skies, mountain clear. Wind at around 25 km/h. Only 8 degrees! Forecast hight is 16 degrees C. I am going to add the wind stuff from the Regional Council's site for Cape Egmont. (I used to live there- it is about 35 minutes drive away from New Plymouth). The area is very windy. Anyway at 7am : 44.5km/hr wind (SE) and the latest gust was 57.9 km/hr.

| Re: Weather reports for June 18th, 2008 Cape Egmont - been there with the caravan two summers ago, had generator and three teenagers with us. Did that west coast up from Wanganui - very interesting area! Did the Falls and the museum too. Tokoroa - Very windy overnight 70kms max gust, 52kms max 1min average, 0-20kms now, min 5.8C right now. High patchy cirrus cloud, expecting a max of 14.

Re: Weather reports for June 18th, 2008 I used to live on the main Road, though the farm stretched down a side road towards the sea as well. Very sunny here, which is good because the house heats up and I need not light the fire until evening.

Re: Weather reports for June 18th, 2008 Sunny morning after low cloud cleared. I looked up Cape Egmont but there are no windrun records for it on NIWA as yet. I'm keeping records of monthly data for all current sites that measure windrun.

Re: Weather reports for June 18th, 2008 The Taranaki Regional Council has records from 1997. Before then, the lighthouse(either the same place or a few metres away) kept records going back to 1930. These I remember reading, in annual summaries. Average wind speed was around 23 or 24 km/h, I don't know how long the wind records were. Currently, the annual mean wind speed is just over 21 km/hr, extreme gust 117 km/h. From memory, I read that in Cyclone Bola in 1988, when over half the houses in the coastal region lost their roofs and most trees were blown out, that the average wind speed was 69 knots for days and the maximum gust was 103 knots. It was in the paper, will check.

Re: Weather reports for June 18th, 2008 Hmmn. I must dig deeper. You would think that all weather data would be centralised! (just joking- just joking)
