Re: Snow reports 4th and 5th July 2008

Snowing hard in central Chch (blizzard-like at times), but not yet settling.
Other upper South Island reports of snow include Seddon and Reefton. North Island: Mt Te Aroha (dusting to 800m) and hills around Taupo.

Snow Re: Snow reports 4th and 5th July 2008

Tokoroa (335m) - It hailed then snowed as the wind went from NW to south quite quickly, hailed first then the wind died as it started to snow gently and faintly, now stopped.

Re: Snow reports 4th and 5th July 2008

It's been snowing off and on all day here in Taihape. 6cm snow on the ground, current temp 1.4 deg, no wind and it's dumping with snow again. Will be interesting to see what the morning brings.

Re: Snow reports 4th and 5th July 2008

It was good to see your photos Gary. And I see the mesomap weather condition icon shows snow for you right now too. I did a hail/snow melt with a hair dryer and measured the melt and it then said snowing... LOL

Theres been a lot of hail judging by your photos and reports, really wintry scene - i miss it tbh, we had a big lack of snow here last winter. Enjoy it whilst it lasts!

Re: Snow reports 4th and 5th July 2008

Well there was extremely heavy hail in St Heliers/Kohimarama in Auckland at about 10pm tonight... I've lived in the same area all my life (only 22 though ) and I've never seen hail that bad - not so much the size of the pieces but the sheer volume. It was backed up in our driveway and on any south-facing windows or anything that made it stop! Interesting thing was that it appeared to be sticking around, rather than melting straight away which is what usually happens. I'd just driven home -- 4 degrees outside -- crazy for Akl!

Edit 11:19 -- ugh, in bed and more hail on my windows. Our house and particularly my level of it is very exposed and bears the brunt of any storm - case in point my concertina windows that I thought were latched properly bursting open tonight and the whole house shaking

Re: Snow reports 4th and 5th July 2008

My fascination with hail soon passed when I went to a supermarket. I had to hang onto my car to walk so I wouldn't slip!
