Post Weather Reports for July 20th, 2008

Awakened by a short, loud thunderstorm! Most rude on a Sunday morning!
Had some funny crackles- more like the noise produced by rustling thin metal sheets.
Anyway, the Sun is out, 14 degrees, light wind, hasn't rained for a couple of hours.

A heavy shower of rain just came through... was very black beforehand, no thunder around though.

BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES - WINTER STORM ON THE WAY
Posted Sun, 20/07/2008 - 19:05
After two relatively settled weeks another violent winter storm is about to lash New Zealand with heavy rain, severe gales and snow to low levels. The low, which will develop during Monday in the Tasman Sea, between Tasmania and Southland, is expected to rapidly deepen and by mid-week will be affecting the entire country.
The Radio Network's head weather analyst, Philip Duncan, says this storm has the potential to be damaging. "Gale force winds wont just be confined to Wellington and Wairarapa - they could stretch as far south as Invercargill and as far north as Auckland".

Won't post the whole thing here...so go to Weather Watch | New Zealand's only regular weather news source for the rest of the story if you're interested. Looks like a hum-dinger this one. Not sure how much snow there'll be but the wind is certainly gonna be big in some places. Have had some sonic booms here in Auckland and a couple of big hail storms to boot. I can't recall a winter with so much lightning and hail. Maybe someone older (or geekier!) can?

Cheers
Phil

Windy Re: Weather Reports for July 20th, 2008

Thanks Phil - it sure looks rough around Tasmania right now, so the low will move NE some and deepens to 972hPa or something... and 40kt westerlies hitting NI west coasts as it passses beyond NI on Wednesday... Hmmm, tie everything down...

Re: Weather Reports for July 20th, 2008

Was thinking- certainly the thunderstorms seem far more than normal. But it remains quite warm here, overall, especially in the days.
