isnt the probe nearer to the pole than the equator?
i.e what are the temperatures like at the equator?

Yes I think that's why they were trying to find ice up at the "North Pole" region but still needing sunlight for energy and communications with the relay orbitor - isn't there one?

Yeh, the probe had to land where the chance of it accessing ice was highly likely.
Equator is much warmer, relatively speaking...I need to check to get you proper figures- from memory it can rise over zero degrees C each day but dive down another 50 degrees at night. Also, the point of measurement is critical. A person standing there may find their feet around 15 degrees, their head at close to zero! Mind you, they would be dead before the difference much bothered them!
