Looks very nice Matt, but fix your spelling of "forecast". Any historical data planned later?

lol, thanks for that. Spelling is not my forté sadly. I have both a monthly historical page and an extreme page. http://palmyweather....monthreport.htm, http://palmyweather.co.nr/record.htm. Thank you for your feedback.

Hi all

Just a reminder that the competition finishes on the last day of this month, so if you are thinking about getting an entry in, now would be a good time to do it. I know there are a few people beavering away on their sites to get them up on time, so be in quick and put your site forward - you have just on two weeks, and nothing to loose.

One last chance to bump this up, and for you to get your entry in. Entries close midnight 30 June

I'm afraid I'm not going to get my final site up in time.
I've only just got my station operational (at the bach) this weekend.
In any case, mine will not be a live site, but one that updates every time we visit the bach (most weekends).

But for the sake of making an entry, any entry, into the competition, here it is:
http://www.tideman.co.nz/PWS/
You'll see that it's just the cumulus default with the .css file tweaked a bit and a background photo that is fuzzy because it's been magnified 3x from something I had lying around - I have only rudimentary facilities here at the bach. Eventually, it will be replaced by one of the stunning photos I have at home.

One of reasons I have installed a PWS is to check out our rainfall compared to the AWSs nearby.
From anecdotal evidence, we reckon our rainfall is greater. That's important to us because it's our only source of freshwater.
Actually, the AWSs show a fair bit of variability as well:

Hi Tideman,

Looking good but cold down there :)
Just a thought to help.
The wind roses on the Gauges page are fairly blurry. I had a play with mine and if I took it back to 8 points and not 16 points, it was clearer. Might be worth a try.
This is under: Configuration - Display in Cumulus.
Right centre, Wind Rose Points 8 or 16
Cheers

Looking forward to the new photo - although the one there is clear enough to remind me of the sailing my family and I did around those parts when we were kids

It's an interesting wee experiment - I'm interested to see the results. Have you had any thoughts around why (at least anecdotaly) there is more rainfall there, than elsewhere on the peninsula?

I think exposure to southerly winds is important for rainfall.
Lyttelton Harbour runs east/west, so it is somewhat protected by Mounts Herbert and Bradley, though in a gale the wind funnels eastward along the harbour.
Whereas Port Levy is orientated NNE/SSW so the southerlies come screaming down the valley and into us.
That's my hypothesis, anyway.
But we've yet to show that Port Levy actually gets more rainfall than Lyttelton.................
My neighbour and I have both been measuring with cheap raingauges and our results compare pretty well, but it's a bit hit and miss when we only visit at weekends. With the PWS measuring continuously, we should get more reliable results.

Yeah that sounds reasonable - I remember one night we were tucked in to a beach in there somewhere having dinner on the beach, and a southerly rolled over the hill. It was predicted, but it arrived right on dusk. One moment it was fine and calm and within about 2 mins it was pouring with rain and gale southerly. By the time we made it back to the boat, the cloud had covered the sun, it was dark, and you couldn't see the sea (or the beach which was more worrying!) due to the amount of wind and sea spray being blown around.

To be honest I don't really now how we survived that night - by pure luck I think

That said I also remember many good nights in Port Levy, so I know it's not that bad every nighthttp://www.nzweather.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/icon_biggrin.gif

Approximately 20% allocated to coding - if your sites CSS and html validates correctly you will get all of this

Hi Andrew, just a note this one will be tricky to mark.
Two of my pages use a tag attribute called 'caption' which is required for the included scripts to work, but w3c validator doesn't like it http://www.nzweather.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/thumbdown.gif (but apart from this they are compliant). And unfortunately one of my pages is written in HTML 4.01 (supplied with cumulus but since modified) - not my fluent language...d'oh! But prepared to lose a few marks over that one ;)

You have a hard decision to make gabba as to me they all look good. Will look forward to the result which is not far away - blink and it will be here.

Well yes I will be voting but so will everyone else I hope - it's not just me that's choosing, and besides the quality is so good that I couldn't fairly pick between them anyway.

I'll post voting details on closure of entries

My website host (dam them) puts their own script on the bottom of my HTML pages for THEIR dam ads. But their script does not validate. Does one loose all 20% for errors, or do you grade based upon how many errors there are? Say 10% off the 20% for, say 10 errors?

Mark it how you want - as the rules state the allocation is only approximate, although to make it easy I've made everything /10

Personally I'll probably mark that one as follows:
if there are no errors the 10/10
if there are one or two errors 9/10
3 or 4 errors 8/10
.
.
.
lots of errors = no marks/10

I personally think compliance is important, but if you think it's not so important you might be more lenienthttp://www.nzweather.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/icon_biggrin.gif

What's probably more important is that when you go through and mark the sites, you are consistent

I trust you emailed them and told them exactly what you thought of their script :)

Well I've emailed my BIG multinational corporation hosting company to see if they can add a forward slash ( / ) in the <br> tag they add to my site by hosting with them. Yea, I'm not expecting a reply. Like they would listen to some kiwi at the bottom of the world... who knows.

Yep, just did. Like they'll listen to a 22 year old "kid" who's entered into some website competition. (not that they know that).

Hi Jenny, that is the page I was talking about that I can't validate. I think the title attributes cause this to have so many errors because they contain their own html, even though the page works fine.

From what I can see the gauges page doesn't validate for two reasons:

(1) in the html there is a closing slash on one of the meta tags
(2) in the CSS there is the use of a center description on the float tag (in numerous places) . Center can only have left, right, none or inherit

Not sure how configurable the pages in cumulus are though to fix these issues

Now don't go and look at my websitehttp://www.nzweather.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/icon_mrgreen.gif

Hi gabba,
I have my own css so its not that.
Meta tags are fine.
To validate cant use 'embed' or 'flashvars'. This much I know.
No matter how I re arrange using 'object' instead of 'embed' it just wont run.
So I gave up and left it as released.
I guess I should email the writer and ask if they could help huh :)

Well I got my reply to my email:

Hi! Please consider upgrade to remove ad code.http ://www......com/removeads.html

That was it. All I wanted was them to remove a single <br> code in their script. Knew it would be too much to ask.
