Ring around the sun

Before the 'weather bomb' storm we were out walking. Absolutely still - especially the sea, quite eerie actually - and the widest ring around the sun I have ever seen - it was way away from the sun! Question - does it (the ring) have a correct name?

Re: Ring around the sun

halo me thinks
yes, it was a good example
the higher the cirrus ice crystals can get and the thinner the first fringes , the better the halo will be i would say...which is what was happening...

Re: Ring around the sun

Yes I would go for halo as well, if it was a good distance from the sun. Usually they have a rainbow effect too.
