Unhappy Diver injured by Stingray

A stingray attack off the North Island's east coast has left a man with a serious stomach wound. Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter spokesman Dean Herrick said the man, in his 40s, was diving in Hawkes Bay this morning when he disturbed a couple of stingrays.

He was not far from the shore at Porongahu, about 40km south of Waimarama, Mr Herrick said. The stingray's barb punctured the man's stomach just below the belly button.

Kiwi is on a distinguished road
Re: Diver injured by Stingray

Not sure it should be labelled as an "attack" because the reaction of the Stingray is defensive, but nevertheless the chap is very lucky.

Re: Stingray diver back in hospital

Max Wakefield, who was speared by a stingray a week ago, had to return to hospital after suffering worse injuries than originally thought.

Mr Wakefield, 46, was diving for crayfish near Blackhead Point in Hawkes Bay when the ray pierced his 14mm wetsuit and plunged its barb into his belly.

Doctors at Hawke's Bay Hospital, where he was taken by rescue helicopter, initially thought the barb had penetrated only fatty tissue, but further examination revealed it pierced a stomach muscle.
