Wettest spot in New Zealand I'm new here so please forgive me if my "intruding" breaks any rules. I'm a Spaniard who lives in New York and loves all things weather. I like to post to another weather website in Spain (meteored.com) and we're just astonished of the variety of climates New Zeland possesses. One of the things that we have discussed in the past (although we couldn't come to a conclusion because we had no official data) is it's world record-breaking rainfall amounts. I know of three sites in the Sourthern Alps that have averages of over 10,000mm: Cropp river (both stations in that little valley) and another one in the Milford Sound area with estimates of 12,000mm+. Anyone have daily data (or pics) from any of the first two stations (Cropp @ Hut or at Waterfall)? Also, knowing how vast that area of New Zealand is (and so "well-positioned"-no pun intended) do you know of any other area currently being studied and has produced some estimates? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Wettest spot in New Zealand Hi there The extreme records for Cropp River can be found here: Summary of NZ Rainfall, Temperature, Sunshine & Wind ExtremesSummary of NZ Rainfall, Temperature, Sunshine & Wind Extremes (up to 31 March 2003):MetService.com - Weather Daily rainfall data for West Coast here: West Coast Regional Council - 7 day graphs There is no historic data archived on this site however, but I have seen up to 800mm in a few days recorded at the Cropp site.

Re: Wettest spot in New Zealand Pleased to help. Do you have a link to current 30-year (or whatever) climate averages for locations in Spain? (temperature, rainfall, sunshine)

Well, there is a website that belongs to the AEMET (the Spanish MetService NZ, aka INM) that offers climatic data here. It is very limited in its offerings, but if you're interested in the climatic particulars of any part of Spain do let me know and I may be able to get you some data. Also, let me know if you need help with the translation. Cheers. |

Re: Wettest spot in New Zealand Thanks very much, the normals info. is nicely summarised. Sunniest place I've found so far is Huelva (2998 mean).

That is a fair whack of Sun. That's more like Perth, Australia?

Re: Wettest spot in New Zealand Interesting to see that the northern coastal places on the Bay of Biscay (and Bilbao) have cloudy climates, at least from Santander to San Sebastian, much more so than Santiago Compostela further west, despite the latter also having over 1800mm of rainfall annually. If I had normals for France as well it would be instructive to look at its southwest corner. [I guess this should be moved to a new thread.]
