Sun Re: Weather reports for October 8th, 2008

Yes a nice day on the way here too, wind is still around westerly at about 20km/hr, sunny and DRY... 8.4ºC overnight low and over 9deg now on the rise, as is the barometer - 1004hPa and climbing. Winds will probably turn SW and the day stay coolish.

Re: Weather reports for October 8th, 2008

Much the same here - the blue skies never lasted long... the winds have picked up - current 10min ave = 46.7km/hr and temp is 11.8ºC (13.9deg High), quite cloudy with occasional blue... and occasional rain...

"And todays forecast - it will be sunny and windy and then cloudy and then some rain and some more sunny spots, and then spring showers. The winds will vary... later there may be thunder showers."

covering my butt...

Re: Weather reports for October 8th, 2008

At face value, today looked like a very typical Christchurch spring day, bright and breezy with 11+ hours of sunshine. One thing was unusual. There was a reasonably stiff north west breeze for most of the day, yet the temperature only reached 15C. It's rare for a 'norwester to result in such relatively low temperatures. I'm not really sure why it happened?

Re: Weather reports for October 8th, 2008

It's not a warm northwesterly - the airstream has been cold enough to dump snow at Arthurs Pass, as it originated at higher latitudes before turning into a westerly flow over NZ. The fohn effect still occurs in the east, but temperatures aren't as high as they would be if the flow came from similar or lower latitudes.
