I snapped this shot of a kereru (wood pigeon) which had been feasting on Chilean guavas in my back garden in the middle of winter.

It is the native wood pigeon, much favoured by the Maori. They are protected and New Plymouth has many of them around where I live. They gorge themselves on fruit and drupes. They have adapted to eating garden plantings well. This one is perched on the guava tree which is alongside a ladies finger banana. If you look at the left leaf of the banana you can see browning where a momentary frosting has affected it. taken 20 June, 2006.
