It is the native wood pigeon, much favoured by the Maori. They are protected and New Plymouth has many of them around where I live. They gorge themselves on fruit and drupes. They have adapted to eating garden plantings well. This one is perched on the guava tree which is alongside a ladies finger banana. If you look at the left leaf of the banana you can see browning where a momentary frosting has affected it. taken 20 June, 2006.
