The detector for the NZ Weather Storm Tracker is sited out of doors, at a height of 15ft above ground level and housed in a weatherproof plastic shield. The detector is facing magnetic north and has been adjusted for true north within the software, so that the strikes are mapped correctly in terms of their direction. As with any lightning detector, range (or distance) is the unknown variable due to atmospheric conditions and local geography. You can be assured that the NZ Weather Storm Tracker will undergo constant adjustment during thunderstorm activity. Its mapping will be correlated with known ground reports, satellite imagery and rain radar results.
Whilst other sites use similar equipment and report their data to triangulation services, it is important to note that the resultant output is only accurate if stringent testing and regular adjustments are carried out - assuming the detector is correctly housed and sited in the first instance. When using any lightning detection service, you should be aware that the data is provided as a general guide only. If you want to get a more accurate result, you should be comparing the NZ Weather Storm Tracker strike maps with other services, which is why we provide discussion topics and radar images during any major convective event on the forum itself.
